The 2008 Word Golf Championships - CA Championship at Doral

The 2008 CA Championship is planned to start on March 17-23 at Doral Golf Resort & Spa and will feature top players from around the world.

PGA World Championship Golf Tournaments

The World Golf Championships events feature players from around the world competing against one another in varied formats (match play, stroke and team). The World Golf Championships feature some of the largest purses in professional golf. First prize money is in excess of $1 million.

The 2008 CA Championship is planned to start on March 17-23 at Doral Golf Resort & Spa and will feature top players from around the world.

Some of golf's best players have emerged victorious during the tournament's eight-year history. Woods counts six victories in this tournament among his 15 World Golf Championships titles. He won the inaugural event in 1999 at Valderrama in Spain and followed that up
with victories in 2002 in Ireland, in 2003 and 2005 in the United States, 2006 in London and earlier this year at Doral Golf Resort & Spa. In 2000, Canadian Mike Weir captured the title, and in 2004, Els of South Africa triumphed.

The 2008 World Golf Championships-CA Championship will have an $8 million purse, with the game's top players competing for the $1.35 million first-place prize and the Gene Sarazen Cup. One of three World Golf Championships events, the CA Championship will feature the top-30 players from the final 2007 FedExCup point standings, the top-50 players from the Official World Golf Ranking the week prior and the week
of the event, the top-10 players from the FedExCup point standings the week prior and the week of the event, along with leaders of the Official Money Lists/Orders of Merit from the European Tour, Australasian Tour, Japan Golf Tour, Asian Tour and Sunshine Tour.

The Championships will feature the top 50 players from the Official World Golf Ranking along with top finishers on the money lists of six Tours comprising the International Federation of PGA Tours (PGA TOUR, European Tour, Australasian Tour, Japan Golf Tour, Asian Tour and Southern Africa Tour).

With this new criteria, the CA Championship can already boast that defending champion Tiger Woods, the 2007 FedExCup champion and a six-time winner of the CA Championship, has qualified for the event, as has Steve Stricker (No. 2 in FedExCup Points), Phil Mickelson (3), Rory Sabbatini (4), K.J. Choi (5), Aaron Baddeley (6), 2007 Masters Champion Zach Johnson (7), Mark Calcavecchia (8), Sergio Garcia (9)
and Vijay Singh (10).

Ogilvy wins CA Championship

With a trusty wedge and a steady hand, Ogilvy closed out the weather-suspended final round of the CA Championship with nine straight pars Monday morning to score a wire-to-wire victory.

He didn't just end Woods' run of seven consecutive worldwide victories and five straight PGA Tour wins. He held off three other major-championship winners closing in on him.

With a final-round one-under-par 71, Ogilvy claimed the $1.35-million first-place check and the Gene Sarazen Trophy. His 17-under 271 total was a shot better than three-time major-championship winner Vijay Singh (68), two-time U.S. Open winner Retief Goosen (68) and U.S. Open winner Jim Furyk (68).

Woods made sure the outcome was never in doubt Sunday, making enough key putts to keep everyone at a distance and playing it safe at the end for a 1-over 73 to capture the CA Championship by two shots.

Tiger Woods has had plenty of success at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa's Blue Course. In 20 rounds there, he is 74 under, going 31 under on the front nine and 43 under on the back nine. His lowest 18-hole score was a 63 in the third round of the 2005 Ford Championship, and his highest was his 73 today.

Tiger Woods fired a 1-over 73 on Sunday to win the World Golf Championships-CA Championship by two strokes.
