The Players Championship, played at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. since 1982, is often referred to as the "Fifth Major."
THE PLAYERS Championship is considered golf's "fifth major" championship because it is the PGA Tour's
richest event and it rewards the winner with tournament exemptions and points toward the FedEx Cup
standings and the World Golf Rankings.
THE PLAYERS has become one of the truly special events on the annual calendar, featuring the strongest field and the biggest purse in professional golf history. Since Jack Nicklaus’ victory in the 1970s, THE PLAYERS Championship has been one of the PGA TOUR’s most coveted titles. Fred Couples, Greg Norman and Tiger Woods are among the great names who have won at the Stadium Course at The TPC Sawgrass over the years.
Historically the tournament has always been held in March, but due to the restructuring of the PGA Tour to accommodate the exciting new FedEx Cup competition, the Players Championship has been moved to the month of May each year.
Although it does not quite make it to Major status – it is not considered an official event of the European Tour – it is in a category of its own. It is the wealthiest tournament of the PGA Tour, offering prize money in excess of US $9 million, and apart from the large purse, the winners are rewarded with added benefits, some of which are:
- A five-year exemption on the PGA Tour
- An open invitation to the US Masters Golf Tournament, valid for three consecutive years
- A three-year exemption for the British Open golf tournament
- Exemptions to both the US Open Golf Championship and the PGA Championships for the year
Added to these bonuses is the fact that the Players Championship offers the winner an inordinately high number of points which count towards the year-end Official World Golf Ranking. The winners of the four Grand Slam events of golf pick up 50 points each, and the victorious player at the Ponte Vedra is allocated 40 points for the win.
THE PLAYERS Championship, was the first event founded for the players by the touring professionals' own organization. Beman's vision was that this event would become a truly special tournament in the eyes of the players because it was, after all, their own. The inaugural tournament was played in 1974. For the first three years the event was moved annually. It was first played at the Atlanta Country Club in Marietta, Ga. The next year it traveled west to Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. In 1976 itwas conducted in South Florida at Inverrary Country Club, in Lauderhill. The following year, Sawgrass Country Club, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., just outside of Jacksonville, became the host site, where itwas played for the next five years.
Consequently, the Players attracts one of the strongest fields in golf, bringing in all but a handful of
the top ranked players. It arguably has a stronger field than any of the other majors, for there are no
amateurs or club professionals invited; every player there is a professional tournament player.
TPC Sawgrass
The May tournament has had several host courses from 1974 through 1981, but its home since 1982 has been THE PLAYERS TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course, which is famous for the island green on the 17th hole. The TPC at Sawgrass has given the Players an identity because that course boasts what is arguably the
most famous hole in golf—the island green par 3 seventeenth.

2011 PLAYERS Championship Winner
South Korea's K.J Choi beat American David Toms in a sudden-death playoff to win the Players Championship 2011 at Sawgrass. Choi become the first Asian to win golf's unofficial "fifth major. The pair had finished the tournament tied at 13-under par after closing with rounds of 70 where they both played consistent and solid golf while their challengers fell by the wayside. Choi, 40, snatched the outright lead with a birdie on the par-3 17th only for Toms to respond by draining a long birdie putt on the final hole, to a huge roar, forcing the playoff, the first Choi has faced on the PGA tour.
2010 PLAYERS Championship Winner
The Players Championship 2010 concluded at Sawgrass and contrary to all indications it was Tim Clark of South Africa, who took the title. Before the final round of the tournament it has looked as though England’s Lee Westwood, would finally win after coming second at the U.S. Masters last month.
If there’s one player who knows more than Lee Westwood about being the ‘nearly man’ it’s Tim Clark, who up until now has always been the proverbial bridesmaid but never the bride. In the 12 year search for a victory in the U.S. Clark had been runner-up in 8 tournaments
