US Open 2008 Winner Tiger Woods

Woods wins classic U.S. Open duel

After playing to a tie through 90 holes in the U.S. Open, Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate marched to the seventh tee at Torrey Pines on Monday afternoon for a sudden-death playoff.

It was the 19th hole of the day. On most courses, the 19th hole is the bar. On this day, the 19th hole was the place to drink in the kind of panorama only golf can provide.

On Monday afternoon, Woods won his 14th major championship, leaving him, at 32, four shy of Jack Nicklaus' record. "This is the best," he said, ranking his majors. "Just because of all the things I had to deal with."

US Open 2007 Results - Winner Angel Cabrera

A former caddie from Cordoba, Argentina, who needed financial assistance to learn the game, Cabrera scaled a walkway above Oakmont and looked out over the expanse of the golf course.

Somewhere, in the distance and out of his control, Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk were lurking. Cabrera took a seat in the scorer’s area of the clubhouse, watching the end of the United States Open on television like so many others, and speaking in staccato Spanish with his caddie.

When Furyk missed a 45-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole and, minutes later, Woods followed with a 30-footer that was off line, Cabrera rose from his chair and into a new echelon in golf. He was the winner of the 107th United States Open. Cabrera, the only player to break par in two rounds, became the first player from Argentina to win the United States Open and the first to win a major since Roberto De Vicenzo won the British Open in 1967.

The U.S. Open is staged at a variety of courses and they are usually set up in such a way that low scoring is very difficult and there is a premium on accurate driving.

Phil Mickelson went into the final hole with a commanding lead, needing only a par to clinch the title. But after an unexpected double bogey, the lead slipped away from Lefty, and 29-year-old Australian Geoff Ogilvy took home the coveted trophy. How will the excitement unfold in '07? Be there at Oakmont Country Club to experience the 107th U.S. Open!
