The PGA Championship at
Oakland Hills Country Club's famed South Course.
This coming
year the 90th PGA Championship returns to Oakland Hills
Country Club which has hosted
no fewer than six US Open Championships, two US PGA
Championships and one Ryder Cup since it formally opened in
1918! Christened 'The Monster' when Ben Hogan won his third
US Open Championship in 1951, Oakland Hill Country Club is
consistently rated among the top ten courses in the United
States! |

Oakland Hills is made up of two
superb courses – North and South Course. The two courses are
connected by the world’s largest arched aluminum pedestrian
bridge. The bridge is 210 feet long, 11 feet wide, and weighs
40,000 pounds. The South Course has hosted all the tournaments
played at Oakland Hills (one round of the 2002 U.S. Amateur was
played on the North Course). Designed by Donald Ross, the South
Course opened in 1918 and is sometimes called “The Monster” and
is rated among the top ten courses in the USA.
Before Oakland Hills hosts the 2008 PGA Championship, South
Course will be reworked by Rees Jones, Robert Trent Jones' son.
Renovation work has started and will see the course brought to
over 7450 yards.
Major renovations
include:
More bunkers
More water – both ponds expanded to double the current
configuration
Moving tees
South Course is also notorious for its rough – though not
necessarily long, it has some of the thickest rough in the
country.
Brief PGA Championship
History
The PGA
Championship is an annual golf tournament, conducted by the
Professional Golfers Association of America as part of the PGA
TOUR. The PGA Championship is one of the four Major
Championships in mens
golf, and it is the golf seasons final major, being played in
August. It is an official money event on both the PGA TOUR and
the European Tour. This Championship is often called "The
Seasons Final Major: Glorys Last Shot!" In line with the other
majors, winning the PGA gives a golfer several privileges which
make his career much more secure, if he is not already one of
the elite of the sport. PGA champions are automatically invited
to play in the other three majors (The Masters, US Open and
British Open) for the next five years, and are exempt from
qualifying for the PGA Championship for life. They also receive
membership on the PGA TOUR for the following five seasons and
invitations to THE PLAYERS Championship for five years. The
Championship has been held at a large number of venues, some of
the early ones now quite obscure, but nowadays it is usually
staged by one of a small group of celebrated courses, each of
which has also hosted several other leading events.

| The much
anticipated 2008 U.S. Open Championship will be held at the
Torrey Pines South Golf course June 9th though the 15th in
La Jolla, California. This is a very exciting event because
this is only the second municipal golf course ever to be
selected to host this prestigious golf championship. The
first was in 2002 at the The Black Course at Bethpage in New
York. |

Torrey Pines was built in
1957 by William Bell Sr. and is only the second golf
course owned by the general public to ever host a U.S.
OPEN Championship. A $ 3.5 million renovation that
included moving several greens to increase the
difficulty and length of the course was completed in
2002.

Pacific Ocean and surrounding bluffs at many of the

2008 US Master
Winner: Trevor Immelman followed in the illustrious
footsteps of Gary Player by becoming only the second
South African winner of the Masters Tournament at
Augusta National. The 28 year old completed a
wire-to-wire victory with a final round of 75 for a
three stroke triumph over World Number One, Tiger Woods.
Immelman, who finished at 8-under 280, started the week
by playing a practice round with his boyhood idol, Gary
Player, who won his third Masters in 1978 and set a
record by playing for the 51st time.
Immelman handled the wind and pressure of Augusta
National far better than anyone chasing him Sunday to
win The Masters, the first South African in a green
jacket in 30 years.
